WEBVTT 1 00:00:01.680 --> 00:00:15.330 Molly Beestrum: Hi my name is Molly Beestrum and I'm the education and curriculum librarian at Galter health sciences library today I'll be providing you with a four part tutorial on using Endnote 20. This part one: getting started and housekeeping. 2 00:00:18.150 --> 00:00:33.510 Molly Beestrum: before you start using Endnote you'll need to download it, you can go to a NU IT Endnote in order to download these materials, it is a free software available to faculty staff and students do follow the instruction downloads carefully, particularly for windows users. 3 00:00:36.360 --> 00:00:52.830 Molly Beestrum: For part one will be focusing on some basics for using endnote, including getting you acclimated to the endnote interface and some basic housekeeping information i'll discuss how to create an unknown library, the end note layout and we'll do some housekeeping information. 4 00:00:53.850 --> 00:01:00.330 Molly Beestrum: for creating are importing journal terms lists for bio science chemical and medical journal titles. 5 00:01:08.730 --> 00:01:22.650 Molly Beestrum: This is the endnote interface i've created a new library, but i'll walk you through the steps for how to create a library, first we'll go to file new and then we can name or in a library, whatever we like i've made my note library endnote tutorial 2021. 6 00:01:24.390 --> 00:01:29.940 Molly Beestrum: Every time you create an endonote library creates two different file types The first one is a dot .enl file. 7 00:01:30.720 --> 00:01:38.310 Molly Beestrum: For endnote library, and the second one is a .data file both file types do need to be on your computer, in order for endnote to function. 8 00:01:38.910 --> 00:01:52.380 Molly Beestrum: You can also create as many I note libraries, as you like I create different libraries for each project that i'm working on, because I do a lot of research for other people, you may choose to just have a single endnote library, where you draw your references from totally up to you. 9 00:01:54.420 --> 00:02:06.330 Molly Beestrum: Each time, you create a new endnote library, you will need to go through some of these housekeeping steps, including importing the journal terms list i'll go for an explanation for that again in a few minutes, just to get you acclimated to the no interface. 10 00:02:07.620 --> 00:02:20.370 Molly Beestrum: let's actually back up a second, and that is a citation management tool, so its primary function is to get references into it, keep your references organized and get your references out of it and into the form of your manuscript or your paper. 11 00:02:21.720 --> 00:02:29.760 Molly Beestrum: So we'll focus on each of those different functions and later portions of the tutorial part two will be looking at how to get your references in and there's several different ways to do that. 12 00:02:30.360 --> 00:02:36.420 Molly Beestrum: Part three will be looking at how to keep your references organized and some of the different tools for managing your citations. 13 00:02:36.990 --> 00:02:47.370 Molly Beestrum: And then part four will be how to get your references, out of a note and into your citation are into your manuscript in word so look at how to use the cite while you write function in Microsoft word. 14 00:02:49.110 --> 00:03:05.370 Molly Beestrum: Just to give you a little overview of the interface here, I always think of this three panel function as having the right hand i'm sorry the left hand panel is your organization Pal the middle panel is your citation details and the left, right hand panel is where you have. 15 00:03:06.960 --> 00:03:11.700 Molly Beestrum: Some of the important different functions for managing some of your references so. 16 00:03:12.720 --> 00:03:20.070 Molly Beestrum: The left hand panel is for organizing and you'll have things like all references and unfiled, and this is where you can create different groups or folders. 17 00:03:20.820 --> 00:03:32.640 Molly Beestrum: The Middle section has some of the different fields information so some of the different fields that you'd like to have displayed, and you can drag those different fields to different parts, depending on what it is that you'd like to see for the different citation information. 18 00:03:34.800 --> 00:03:45.720 Molly Beestrum: You can also right-click on fields heading to see some of the different fields that are available and choose to check or uncheck different fields, depending on whether or not you'd like them, visible in that middle panel. 19 00:03:47.190 --> 00:03:50.790 Molly Beestrum: The right hand panel right now doesn't have any information in it, but it would have. 20 00:03:51.360 --> 00:04:02.580 Molly Beestrum: The summary details for each of their fields there's also the ability to edit this section, so if there were errors in the data when it was important, you could correct and fix that here in your endnote library. 21 00:04:03.300 --> 00:04:12.690 Molly Beestrum: It would also have a preview for the different output styles and if you do have pdfs attach This is where you would get to the pdfs for those individual citations. 22 00:04:15.150 --> 00:04:22.950 Molly Beestrum: Before we get started with importing references there is that piece of housekeeping we do have to take care of and you do need to do this every time you create an endnote library. 23 00:04:23.310 --> 00:04:30.750 Molly Beestrum: And this is to import terms list for different journal titles so i'm going to go to the library go to define terms list. 24 00:04:31.800 --> 00:04:39.660 Molly Beestrum: And then click on journals now, before we go much further, I just want to show you, if I toggle over to terms, there are no journal terms in this. 25 00:04:40.170 --> 00:04:46.380 Molly Beestrum: folder currently and normally, this would have the full journal titles, as well as abbreviations for different journal titles. 26 00:04:46.860 --> 00:05:02.400 Molly Beestrum: And that's what we're going to import so that when you do have references in your library that may have abbreviated journal titles this will make those to the full journal titles that an abbreviated journal titles, so that, depending on the output style, it will display properly. 27 00:05:03.690 --> 00:05:11.100 Molly Beestrum: So i'm going to toggle back to journal terms lists and again just run on top we're going to click on library define terms list click on journals. 28 00:05:11.580 --> 00:05:16.230 Molly Beestrum: For windows users, which i'm going to show first which close to click on import list. 29 00:05:16.590 --> 00:05:25.440 Molly Beestrum: There are some additional steps for Mac users and I have a slide that in just a second will outline the steps you'll take from this point everything's the same up until you click on import list. 30 00:05:26.100 --> 00:05:38.580 Molly Beestrum: So when I click on import list as a PC user i'm just going to click on bioscience and open and i'm going to do this, three times i'm going to do this for bio science, which I just did again click on import list do it again for chemical. 31 00:05:40.500 --> 00:05:44.190 Molly Beestrum: And then do it the third time for medical so now it's imported 32 00:05:45.420 --> 00:05:53.910 Molly Beestrum: Several thousand almost 20,000 journal titles for bio science chemical and medical journals when I toggle back over to terms now. 33 00:05:55.170 --> 00:06:05.280 Molly Beestrum: give it a second update i'll see that there are 20,000 journal titles now available from the full title, as well as some of the different abbreviations that you might find it. 34 00:06:09.840 --> 00:06:19.320 Molly Beestrum: So for Mac users, as I said, it's the same up until the point where you import the journalist at that point, it will take you to Finder, and they are you want to click on Applications. 35 00:06:19.860 --> 00:06:29.340 Molly Beestrum: and select Endnote 20 then click on terms list and then we'll do the same process again three times once for bioscience once for chemical and what's for medical terms. 36 00:06:34.830 --> 00:06:42.990 Molly Beestrum: Once you've done through that gone through the process of updating the journal terms list you're ready to get started with importing references into your endnote library. 37 00:06:43.350 --> 00:06:49.260 Molly Beestrum: will focus on how to get references into your account library and part two we'll look at three different ways to get references in. 38 00:06:49.650 --> 00:06:57.300 Molly Beestrum: And then, again in part three, will look at how to keep your references organized and part four how to get your references into your manuscript using the cite while you write feature
