Description
Presented on June 28, 2018 for the InCites Midwest User Group Meeting held at Galter Health Sciences Library & Learning Center.
Abstract
Researchers and research groups often feel pressured to maintain high levels of productivity to advance their careers or gain research funding. This presentation is a discussion of research performance metrics that move away from reinforcing the old paradigm of publish or perish. The Category Normalized Citation Impact and Percentile Rankings found in InCites are not directly tied to research productivity, though they are often used as a proxy for research performance. We will show examples of these metrics being used in research impact assessments, and discuss the strengths, limitations, and recent debates about these metrics in the literature. This presentation is meant to spark discussion and thought about the different types of metrics available in InCites and how we describe or use these metrics in practical research evaluation.Other
