Data for "Assessment of diagenesis in archeological human second metacarpal bones using the intensity of the small angle x-ray scattering D-period peak"

Description

The information in this record is for the paper “Assessment of diagenesis in archeological human second metacarpal bones using the intensity of the small angle x-ray scattering D-period peak” published in Journal of the Royal Society Interface in 2025. The data consist of x-ray diffraction patterns (i.e., wide angle x-ray scattering, WAXS, patterns) and of small angle x-ray scattering (SAXS) patterns. The data files are grouped by sample name “HH” plus a sample number. For clarity in the paper’s text, “HH” is replaced by “Gred”, the abbreviated name of the site.

The WAXS data are compressed in GE detector format and are indicated by file type GE2. The SAXS data are zipped using a windows computer. In addition to the patterns from the human archeological second metacarpal bones, there are calibration patterns from ceria “CEO2” for WAXS and “AgBeh” for SAXS.

WAXS information: The nominal sample to detector distance is 1.684375e+03 mm, and the x-ray energy is E = 71.676 keV. The Ge files end with “ge2”. Each GE image is 2048 x 2048 pixels 2 bytes with 8192 byte header in the beginning of the file and can contain multiple frames. The dark file is named “dark”.

SAXS information: The nominal pixel size is 55 um, and the sample to detector distance is 6500 mm. The images are 16 bit tiffs consisting of 402 x 1024 pixels. The files are designated by “pixirad” in the compressed file name.
